Growing Garlic

Just when you have put most of your garden to bed, it’s time … to plant!
Garlic, that is.
These snow-white little nuggets of flavor go in the ground in October or November, to be harvested in late July or August.

Garlic comes in 2 types: hardneck, the most commonly grown in New England, has larger cloves and produces curlicued scapes in the Spring. Softneck has more, smaller cloves, but it’s the type you can braid. There’s something to be said about having a gorgeous, large braid of garlic hanging in your kitchen. To me, that’s true wealth!

The plants are not fussy. They like full sun, water, a bit of phosphorus, and good organic matter. Mulch it well after planting and you’re good to go.
