CARBON POSITIVE LANDSCAPE

offered by Laetitia

This information is from an article written by Lydia Lee, a freelance writer who focuses on design and sustainability.

So how does one remove more carbon dioxide than you are generating? One example is planting a large tree or even just creating a green landscape. An alternative to a high maintenance lawn is using low-growing fescue grass often sold as a no-mow lawn seed mix. A real alternative is the ground cover Kurapia which is very low maintenance and handles light to moderate foot traffic. Its extreme root system is great for stabilizing slopes. It is sold as plugs or sod.

There are also many plants native to our region that make fantastic ground covers. https://wildones.org/ is a great resource. They have a “Less lawn more life” challenge coming up in early May. Check it out here: https://www.lesslawnmorelife.com/?ref=wildones

For trees, choose the largest and most long-lived species but be sure to allow space for it to grow and this will eliminate the need for pruning.

Skip commercial fertilizers but choose organic slow-release compost as a better choice.

Another tip: instead of using a gas-powered leaf blower you can use a heavy duty garden/garage broom! Now that certainly is a new approach!

Remember that photosynthesis includes carbon sequestration in its process, and tilling releases carbon in the atmosphere. So plant more and till less!
